Here a few helpful tips that we have learned over the years when choosing a videograhper:

• Choose someone that has a good reputation. Check what other professionals will say about this person.
  Other professionals (like photographers, florists, and wedding planners) will be aware of videographers that
  are unethical and will never refer them to their clients.
• Find if his/her editing style fits your needs. Most videographers will have video samples of their work.
  Most will have a style of editing (i.e storytelling, documentary, random, etc.) that is consistent with there
  level of talent and creativity.
• Inquire if the videographer belongs to any professional associations. Professional video organizations will help to increase
  the creativity and productivity of its membership as well as promote a code of ethics. Most professionals will belong
  to at least one association.
• What kind of equipment does he or she using. Good or modern equipment does not mean good video but it can be
  an indication of the level of commitment the professional has to giving the customer the best product available.
• Choose someone who is customer focused.
• And above all choose someone you can like as a person and trust.

When I think of things to tell people on how to select a videographer, I often want to tell 
them "HOW NOT TO CHOOSE" a videographer.  Some recent footage a friend showed me amounted to a 
horror story for a wedding video.  Although the videographer was well equipped with lots of 
equipment he was short on experience in actually doing a video.  Since he arrived at the 
wedding with only one tape he simply rewound the tape to the beginning once it reached the end.  

The audio was muffled even though he was very close to the her when she said her vows.  
There was lots of footage of feet and ankles but what really got her was that he decided to
be fancy and use in-camera fades and effects basically ruining some decent footage.

She and I will work on editing this tape in the future.
